Explanation[edit | edit source]

From June 27th to August 1st of 1983, Garfield featured no less than six strips repeating the first two panels verbatim - Jon chastising Garfield for getting in his fern (as his tail is peeking out) and asking him "What do you have to say for yourself?" The punchline is different every time, and this strip collects them all in a "choose your own ending" format.

Unsurprisingly, the title refers to the famous Choose Your Own Adventure novels, which featured similar branching paths.

Original strips from 1983-06-27, 1983-07-04, 1983-07-16, 1983-07-18, 1983-07-25, 1983-08-01.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Garfield, I know you're in my fern. I can see your tail.

Jon: What do you have to say for yourself?

{comic branches into six "choose your own ending" panels}

1 Garfield: {extending a paw} Dr Livingstone, I presume.

2 Garfield: {rising so the fern forms a head-dress} I say we attack the fort at dawn.

3 Garfield: {remaining hidden} Arf?

4 Garfield: {appearing on opposite side of Jon from the fern, without a tail} Pardon me, sir. Have you seen a tail around here?

5 Garfield: {remaining hidden} You'll have to speak up. I can't hear you over the band.

6 Garfield: {remaining hidden} If you must know, I am a rare carnivorous fern, and if you don't mind, I'd like to finish eating your cat in peace.
